What's In a Name?
Instructive interference is a a tongue in cheek homage to a principle of physics. "Constructive Interference" is a phenomenon wherein two waves interact, in phase, and result in a larger more powerful wave.
Instructive Interference then is meant to refer to a similar phenomenon in education wherein educators, in search of best practice, interact professionally and are better, more effective because of it. By facilitating these interactions, Instructive Interference hopes that the wave of educators adopting the principles of 21st Century Learning will grow stronger and become the norm. This project is a collection of tools (links are on the left) designed to inform, involve and engage teachers.
A Brief Case for 21st Century Learning?
Since the mid 1980's there has been a global economic shift resulting in the movement of labour and industry from developed to developing countries. Here at home the industrial base that was once the envy of the world is now largely gone. What's left is an opportunity with a narrow window. The key to moving from the industrial age of the past is education - public education. Our education system has been dedicated and patterned after the industry that it sought to provide for. The future (and present) present drastically different challenges for public education. In an age where nearly all jobs are "offshoreable" we are entering our people wll compete with others from around the globe.
Creativity, critical thinking, flexibility, self-management, discipline, media and information literacy, digital literacy and global awareness are now the most sought after qualities in employees. These are the skills that will keep industry competitive on the newly leveled playing field. These are the skills that must be developed in our schools. It's not pie in the sky, it's an economic imperative!
